One track recordings that were duplicated to become stereo. Enhancements consisted of dynamics for continuity and Pantheon reverb software to simulate space, or an illusion of a room the piece was performed in. Everything was recorded around the same time as "A Line From A Pale Blue Dot." I grew tired of constructing pieces of music, or maybe even lazy. The Blue Dot thing was a burn out, let's make something as long as possible, no cuts, no tracks kind of disc. I was thinking of Jethro Tull's "A Passion Play" when conceiving that one. This happens to be a series of works that I can best describe as exercises in solitude, hence the title. Alone at the restaurant, waiting for a table, staring at the pictures on the wall, checking out the groups coming in. Ganesha The Hindu God of Obstacles, as well as a God of beginnings. I was looking at a book on Asian art and found a photograph of a small statue of Ganehsa. It looked like somthing out of a Harryhausen movie. I felt the music fit the picture quite well. 3am Cab Ride From the Airport to the Hotel The absolute worst night of my life. The airplane ride from hell. Tallahassee to Atlanta. I was supposed to arrive in San Antonio at 10:30 pm, but got there at 3 am. The wonderful Delta Airlines crew took the only airport shuttles and left all the passengers stranded at the airport. Eight people could have fit in each shuttle, but the 8 crew members decided to take the four vans, two per van. A riot almost ensued. When the cabs started showing up, a stranger from the plane suggested we share a cab. I had a pinched nerve in my neck, as well as tired and angry, and happily agreed. The cab ride through San Antonio was beautiful. It is a gorgeous city, the best in the state. At least it was that night. Belveder I have unsuccessfully attempted to give MC Escher homage in my music many times. Belveder is one of my favorite works of his, and I think this one fits. Lysergic Martini If I try to explain this one in full detail, I may get myself in trouble. Yeah, I dropped alright. Plenty of times. Songs from more liquid, electric days. The Pumpkin Girl A story in Chinese mythology that I found interesting. This was actually recorded in the same session as Vanilla Shake. The two were good on their own, but not good together. On A Distant Shore Going back to the Hitch Hiker's Guide, the scene in the TV show were Author Dent and Ford Prefect get caught in the unprobability drive and become penguins and the shore is really strange. Combine that with waking up on the beach after a few Lysergic Martini's. Idyll Idol Idle Ideal I really like this one. The title comes from a page on a Joni Mitchell cd booklet. I think it was "Taming The Tiger". Land Of The Elephants I was going for something Asian/Indian, as well as a "live jam". The title is taken from a Burmese painting, late 19th century. Very colorful, very peacefull. Deadulus A painting by Andre Masson. A dark, turbulent, surreal painting. Initiation of Mithras Something dark, mysterious. I have long studied the mystery religions and this is a small segment of the study. Underneath the Overpass Taking shelter from the storm, but that title has been used too many times for me to be comfortable with it. I decided to look at this one as being either homeless or a small animal. The structure becoming sanctuary. The Dreams Of The Innocent I was watching my dog have a dream when I did this one. I always wonder just what are they dreaming about. Especially when their feet move and they bark. Left for Dead on the Subway Tracks I have a fun time explaining my music to coworkers in extremely violent terms. I said this one was about having the shit beat out of you and being thrown on the tracks so the train will run over you and kill you making it look like an accident. The scary part is that I'm not kidding. Vanilla Shake Musically, it is a continuation of the Pumpkin Girl. As far as content, it takes up a few hours after the Lysergic Martini, washing up on A Distant Shore, and sleeping it off Underneath the Overpass. I love a good vanilla shake, by the way. 112807 (Live From The Lighthouse Keepers Convention) Totally live, recorded 11.28.07. To my knowledge, there are three songs about, or mentioning Lighthouse Keepers. "I'm Going To Marry a Lighthouse Keeper" which is in the movie "A Clockwork Orange", "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" by Van Der Graff Generator, and "So Said The Lighthouse Keeper" by Klatuu. The ultimate life in solitude. Just how exciting would a convention of them be. Probably, quite intense, and I'd feel right at home. Mei Fu Flies a Phoenix To Feihong 18th Century Chinese illustration. A rhapsody in blue and green. All selections copyright 2008 David Wayne Higgins. The cover photograph was taken by Carol Higgins.
